textile design

I have recently become very interested in textile design as a career (maybe I’ve had too much time on my hands)…as a graphic designer, I love looking for textured black and white photography, backgrounds, repeating patterns, and picking out paper, etc when starting a new project. When I worked at Putumayo in Charleston, SC as a fashion design intern, the first thing we did when planning out a new collection was to tack photos and clippings of different textures and patterns on a cork board to start the process. So, I’m guessing that’s where I got my approach from….but wouldn’t it be cool to actually design the texture/pattern for fabric, wall coverings, paper, etc?

Recently (in my free time) I have been researching several textile designers across the world on the www and found her.

SHE inspires me! My favorite is below:

Hope to share lots more from my research :)

I went to school for textile design and will be moving to Charleston, SC. Would Putumayo be worth contacting during my job search? Do you know of any other apparel or fabric companies in that area?

Possibly, they do all of their design in-house and it’s a great environment to work in. It’s a very small organization though (last time I checked they had 1 designer). I’m not aware of any other places besides Putumayo to research…best of luck to you! Charleston is a great city to live in!!
